The Local History Collection focuses on the history of Orange County California and the cities within Orange County, Southern California and to a lesser extent California as a whole.
The collection includes 3860 cataloged books and pamphlets, correspondence, ephemera, manuscripts, maps, memoribilia, microfilm, papers, periodicals, posters and photographs.

Contains a diary by Johann Peter Zeyn, written in German and covering his journey from Hamburg, Germany to San Francisco in 1849, California, as well as his life in and around San Francisco up until 1853.
Includes a typed abstract and English translation, an article on the diary's discovery, correspondences regarding the distribution of copies of the diary, and photocopies of the diary's pages. Also includes pages later written by Mrs. C.E. Holcomb from 1910 to 1912.
