283 -- Nubian water wheel at irrigation farm, Italy
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of photographs taken between 1882 and 1953 of various exterior locations primarily in Orange County, California, including Santa Ana, Tustin, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Garden Grove, Orange, San Juan Capistrano, San Juan Hot Springs, and Irvine. There are also photographs of Catalina Island and Riverside. More than half of the photographs date to the period prior to 1900. The collection includes in most cases the glass plate or film negatives used to create the prints.

General
Irrigation farm in Italy. A man and two children are standing next to a mule or donkey that is tied to the circular wheel. Nubian wheel. It is a vertical wheel bearing a number of pottery vessels. When the wheel spins in the water, the pottery vessels are filled with water and then poured into the basin to be irrigated (Fig. 5). This wheel is connected to another wheel parallel to it and has wooden gears clipped in the wheels of another horizontal wheel. Connect the animal in a connected arm, and when the animal revolves around the last axis of the wheel, the stem rotates accordingly. See also photo: SS-282. Italy.
