Biographical / Historical
The graha or cup [graha- ‘drawing’ i.e., of liquid, especially the Soma juice] involves the drawing pouring and decanting of the Soma juice. This is an action that occurs in various Soma rituals, of which the Agniṣṭoma is the standard form. In this ritual there are 36 such “drawings,” each of which has a cup. Soma, in the ritual context, refers either to a plant, perhaps the Amanita muscaria or “fly-agaric” mushroom, or the juice for the plant, which... if the fly-agaric is the plant, is hallucinogenic. The Soma (plant and juice) and Agni (fire) are the two most important ingredients in the Soma ritual.
