General
Elaine Redfield (1917-2014) was born in New York City, three blocks from Carnegie Hall, and developed a love of music from a young age. In 1950, Redfield moved to Orange County, where she ran an interior decorating business, and in 1954 helped establish what would become the Philharmonic Society of Orange County.
Redfield also served on Fullerton's Cultural and Fine Arts Commision, the Friends of the Library at the University of California, Irvine, the President's Advisory Council at Chapman Coolege, and the board of trustees of South Coast Reperatory Theatre.
Following the opening of the Los Angeles Music Center in 1964, Redfield began leading efforts to create a a music center in Orange County. In 1979, Henry Sergerstrom agreed to Redfield's request to donate land, and the Orange County Performing Arts Center, later renamed the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, opened in 1986.
