The Local History Collection focuses on the history of Orange County California and the cities within Orange County, Southern California and to a lesser extent California as a whole.

The collection includes 3860 cataloged books and pamphlets, correspondence, ephemera, manuscripts, maps, memoribilia, microfilm, papers, periodicals, posters and photographs.

General

Born in Madison County, Iowa in 1889, Townsend graduated from Ginnell College with an A.B. in social sciences, and from the State University of Iowa with an M.A. in poilitical science and public administration.

After serving in World War I, he was a public school teacher for ten years. Townsend then worked for twenty years as a public relations expert for the U.S. Department of the Interior Burueau of Reclamation Information Service at Boulder Dam (now Hoover Dam), where he researched, lectured, and wrote on the Colorado River, before retiring in Brea, California.
