Biographical / Historical
Charles Vincent de Vet was born on October 28, 1911, in Fayette, Mississippi, United States. De Vet earned his bachelor’s degree at Ferris State College in 1938, and also attended the University of Michigan from 1938 until 1940. De Vet began his career as a school teacher at Brampton, Michigan, in 1934, working at various schools through 1940. He then joined the U.S. Postal Service as a transport worker and continued there until his retirement in 1968.
De Vet’s first science-fiction story, “The Unexpected Weapon,” was published in Amazing Stories in 1950. His first novel, Cosmic Checkmate (with Katherine Mac Lean), was published by Ace Books in 1962 as one half of an Ace Double paperback; it was later revised and expanded under the title Second Game, and published by DAW Books in 1981. His second novel, Special Feature, an expansion of a 1958 story published in Astounding Science Fiction, was issued by Avon Books in 1975. De Vet’s forte, however, was the short story, and he published over sixty science fiction shorts in all the major magazines of the day. His final story, “Third Game,” appeared in Analog in February 1991.
De Vet was best known as a science-fiction writer and the author of such works as Cosmic Checkmate (then Second Game), Special Feature and Third Game. He was also the author of over sixty science fiction short stories in all the major magazines of the day.
