Elaine Patricia Elliott Barnard, born in Brooklyn New York Octover 6, 1930 to Agnes Farrell and George Elliot, was a resident of La Mirada, California from 1956-1965 and Laguna Beach from 1965-2022. she was married in 1953 to Ernie Barnard. He died in 1997. in 2010 she met the widower Stephen Kovac, who was her partner until her death May 6, 2022. She had one child, Bryn Barnard, born in 1956, who married Rebecca Parks in 1985, divorced in 2010. The had two grandchildren, Wynn Barnard (b. 1990) and Parks Barnard (b.1992). Bryn married shelley Drennan in 2018.
Elaine studied acting at the University of Washington, Seattle, where she got her B.A., and playwriting at the University of California, Irvine, where she got her M.F.A. She was a stage, television, and film actress for her entire adult life, an elementary school teacher for twelve years, and for several semesters, an adjunct instructor of playwriting at CSU, Fullerton. She wrote plays, short stories, poems, novels, teleplays, and screenplays. There is also correspondence about this writing from 1968 when she wrote her first short story ("The Lady of the Filed Finger") until her death in May 2022, shortly before the publication of her second collection of short stories ("Fear").
In 1954 Elaine Barnard moved to Los Angeles with a freshly minted drama degree from the University of Washington, Seattle to pursue a career in acting. In this first act, she became an accomplished actress, with credits on stage, TV and film.
In 1975, Elaine received her MFA in playwriting from UCI, where she studied under William Inge, beginning a second act writing award-winning plays, with performances of her work in Santa Fe, New York, Los Angeles and London. During this period she also wrote several unpublished novels.
In 2008, after a teaching trip to China that transformed her style and approach from introspection to empathy, Elaine began a third act as a writer of short stories and flash fiction that were published in numerous literary magazines and collected in two published books: The Emperor of Nuts: Intersections Across Cultures and Fear: Short and Shorter Stories, the latter published in July of this year.
This final act was the most fruitful and satisfying for Elaine. The pace of publication and recognition of her work was accelerating at the time of her death. Elaine was a member of SAG/AFTRA, AAUW and the Los Angeles chapter of PEN.

Processing Information
She wrote in longhand, then typescript, initially saving typed hard copies, and later soft copies of everything she wrote. She used several idiosyncratic filing systems: by year, by name, and by category, which were intermingled in her file cabinets.
Many of her notes and corrections are on the actual file filders themselves. No soft copies have been made of these materials.
