Biographical / Historical

Jim Noonan, a former student at CSUF, played a significant role in the protest movement during the Spring of 1970. As a student on the GI Bill, he witnessed the widespread discontent that engulfed the nation, particularly concerning civil rights and the Vietnam War. When Ronald Reagan visited the campus in February 1970, hecklers disrupted the event, resulting in a disciplinary hearing that sparked a larger protest movement. Jim was was among the hecklers who disrupted the hearing on March 3, 1970. During the ensuing confrontation between student protestors and law enforcement, Jim actively participated, although his involvement was limited to disarming a police officer. The months that followed saw more protests against the war and the CSUF administration, leading to trials, convictions, and even a jail sentence for Jim Noonan. He was eventually arrested for distributing copies of "People vs Ronald Reagan" and served 30 days of solitary confinement in the Orange County Men's Jail.

Despite the tumultuous events, Jim managed to continue his education and graduated from CSUF in 1972. He later found employment with the Veterans Administration (VA), but it turned out that CSUF refused to have him involved in a new federal veterans program, causing the VA to redirect their assignment to Fullerton College. The irony of returning to CSUF, a place that once arrested and jailed him, and now potentially contributing valuable insights into past events, was not lost on Jim. He has also reflected on his journey as a conscientious objector in the army, struggling for reclassification and ultimately being honorably discharged after sacrificing his future claims to veteran's benefits. Noonan has since maintained his values from the '60s and '70s, advocating for peace, engaging in environmental initiatives like recycling and organic gardening, and pursuing diverse careers while cherishing their time spent with loved ones.

A more detailed account written by Noonan is in the box with the newspaper clippings.
